Travel apps that will make your life easier: Tips from the podcast

If you asked me what app I can’t do without when I’m traveling, it would be a tight race between Google Maps and Google Translate. But beyond the obvious, what other apps exist to revolutionize your travel experience?

I admit, I’m a bit of a low-tech traveler, but after searching around for the coolest travel apps, I can’t wait to hit the road again to try some of these out (I’ve really got my eye on Time Shifter and SkyGuru!). For longer convos about each of these apps and more, check out this week’s episode. For the bullet points, read on!

Of course, every airline and online platform will have their own, dedicated app (think Air BnB, Skyscanner, Kayak, Expedia, Hostelworld, etc), but why download a different airline app for every flight when you could just choose Flio or FlightAware and stay up to date no matter which airline you’re flying?

All apps highlighted here are free to download (though some have in-app purchases or upgrades) and are available on both iPhone and Android platforms.

Hopper helps you get the best travel deals

  • Tracks and predicts prices for flights and hotels
  • Get notifications for the best time to buy
  • You can book tickets and make reservations within the app itself

Packpoint: a packing list organizer.

  • Enter details including your destination and planned activities, and the app will check the weather forecast for you and generate a packing list for your trip
  • You can edit the list (add or remove items manually) and add number of items (like how many socks you’ll need), then also digitally check off things as they’re packed
  • You can also share the list between friends if you’re traveling together

Flio: all the airline apps rolled into one

  • Get updates on flights, delays, baggage claim info, etc
  • You can also access airport guides, maps, and lounge information
  • There’s also a lost luggage concierge that you can call within the app (in 6 languages!) that will help you track down your luggage within 24 hours

FlightAwareanother do it all flying app

  • You can track your flight status and terminal and gate info
  • You’ll get push notifications in case of flight delays or cancellations
  • View radar for weather and flight path

Time Shifter helps you beat jet lag

  • Enter your trip information and it will cater a plan to help you adjust to the new time zone
  • The plan will include what time to go to bed and wake up in the weeks/days leading up to your flight
  • Other information includes when you consume or avoid caffeine, and even when you might benefit from looking at a bright light
  • Push notifications will help you stick to the plan

Sky Guru: everything for the nervous flyer

  • SkyGuru was designed by a professional pilot and fear of flying therapist Alex Gervash
  • It includes information, advice, and predictions for all parts of the flight, including takeoff, cruising, and landing
  • You enter your flight info, and the app will advise you on which seat to pick, update you on delays, etc
  • The app monitors your position and altitude while in the air and predicts turbulence, as well as monitoring the intensity
  • The app provides explanations for all the weird noises and feelings you may experience in a plane, including all the weird engine sounds, shudders, clanking, and more
  • It even measures turns and banking to explain what’s happening en route
  • Yes, it works in airplane mode
